Meet Sheriff Barrett

Sheriff Kalvin Barrett serves as the 53rd Sheriff of Dane County—the first African American to hold the position. Appointed in 2021 and elected in 2022, he’s led with a focus on equity, transparency, and community trust. A former educator and law enforcement officer, Barrett began his career with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and later taught criminal justice at Madison College. He has expanded mental health response, treatment, and re-entry programs, and ended participation in deportation-related initiatives. A UW–Madison graduate with a master’s in criminal justice, Barrett is a husband, father, and champion for safer, fairer communities.
